A typical day in kindergarten starts with me greeting them outside. I always acknowledge them to let them know that I’m here, and I’m going to be here every day. So they will see me, smiling and happy (or not), but I’m here, they’re here, we're here to be together, be happy and we're here to get some things done and learn.
In the mornings I always say, “good morning”, then we stop at our door, we sanitize our hands of course and then we do our morning greetings. They can choose from my list that I have next to my door, and it will say “good morning, hello” we get to wink, air-hugs, thing of that nature and then we come in, we get down to our unpacking. Then we sit down and take out our homework folders and then we get on to our morning work.
Our morning work is not always a piece of paper, sometimes it's just food for thought. Sometimes I have an inquisitive question I would ask and see what they think about that.
Sometimes we’re building a graph or sometimes we’re playing with Play-Doh. The variety is here-and-there. I like to mix it up because I like to keep them interested in that's how I usually start off may days.
After we switch from our morning work, we going to reading centers or we go to our reading groups. I'm getting them to read and getting them to learn how to move around the room without me. Be independent. I want them to sit at their desks for at least 20 minutes and focus their brains.
After reading groups, we go into our math meetings, to our carpet meeting and we do our lessons that are guided. From there we go to specials and then to lunch and then after that we have science (which I love the most) and from science and social studies so we end our day with the little free-play we relax our brains a bit before we go home, we say goodbye and we'll see each other in the morning.
